The Castle Class, designed by C.B. Collett, first appeared in 1923 being proclaimed as Britain’s most powerful passenger locomotive. The design was revised in 1932, started with No.5013, with No.5029 Nunney Castle appearing two years later, named after the castle near Frome in Somerset.
No. 5029 spent much of her working life based at Old Oak Common then in 1958 moved to Worcester followed by spells at Newton Abbot and Laira before being withdrawn from Cardiff East Dock.
It was sold to Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry, but was rescued for preservation in 1976. Nunney Castle is portrayed in the condition it was built in 1934.
